The MedStAR program provides UW medical students with opportunities for mentored research and training in Addiction Medicine with the goal of encouraging medical students to consider careers in Addiction Medicine and research. The program is centered around the “Independent Investigative Inquiry” 9-week block between 1st and 2nd year of medical school (approximately mid-June to mid-August) and involves a mentored project, structured didactics and clinical experiences in Addiction Medicine. The program facilitates opportunities to present scholarly work at regional and national meetings as well as fostering ongoing mentoring. Students are linked with mentoring team including a research mentor, a clinical mentor and have the expertise of a PhD research coach.

During the summer, MedStAR students will participate in a 9-week training block consisting of didactic lectures which include guest lecturers, career panels, journal clubs, and work-in-progress presentations. Students will receive online trainings in responsible conduct of research. Additionally, students will be offered optional workshops on statistical analysis, citation/reference management software, and publication and presentation prep. Students will meet with their research and clinical mentor regularly and receive professional mentorship via assistance with their research and career guidance. Students are required to enroll in, and fulfill the all requirements for, the Independent Investigative Inquiry course. To support students, the MedStAR program offers a $5,000 financial stipend for the summer. After completing the 9-week summer block, students will continue to receive ongoing mentoring for the remainder of their medical school training. Students will also present their research at a national conference.

Stanford’s Center for Innovation in Global Health announces this year’s competition and application for the Stanford Fellowship in Media and Global Health to teach physicians-in-training to use various media channels to advocate and inform on global health issues. Fellows will be chosen from a national pool of US medical students committed to a career in global health. This opportunity provides medical students with 12 months of practical training in the fundamentals of journalism, communications, and global health reporting on a variety of media platforms, including print, online, broadcast, social and digital media. Each year, the fellow participates in three rotations over the course of the fellowship year. They will spend the fall quarter (September through December) in journalism on campus with Stanford’s Graduate Program in Journalism. In the winter, the fellow is embedded with Dr. Sanjay Gupta at CNN in Atlanta to learn the fundamentals of how the news media chooses and researches stories. In late Spring, the fellow is encouraged to pursue an overseas or domestic capstone project of their choice on an untold global health story tackling equity issues. The Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care is offering an exciting research opportunity for medical students. The Value-Based Health Care Summer Research Intern position provides an opportunity to closely work with leading Dell Medical School orthopaedic faculty on clinical and/or health services delivery research projects over the course of an 8-12 week period. This is a one-year paid research program for medical students (after completing your third year) that is well known in the cardiovascular medicine scientific community. Selected students will have the opportunity to conduct research at one of the nation’s top biomedical research labs (i.e. MIT, Brigham and Women’s, Johns Hopkins, among others) under the close supervision of a faculty mentor. This fellowship allows students to gain access to a community of lifelong mentors in cardiovascular medicine. The program will also pay for students to attend the American Heart Association meeting. This project is focused on surgical education and simulation. This opportunity would allow for literature search, curriculum writing and creation, set up and arranging simulation of surgical skills.
