Pathway applications are open through Dec. 1, 2023.
The Office of Healthcare Equity (OHCE) application process is a rolling application cycle, but please note the office will reach out to EVERYONE who has applied by the Dec. 1 deadline with next steps and future information, goals and timelines.

Here are non-clinical electives sponsored by the Office of Healthcare Equity for Autumn 2023. You do NOT have to apply for a Pathway to register for a non-clinical elective sponsored by OHCE; interested and engaged students are always welcome!
For full descriptions and more information about each class, please see this page with information about the non-clinical electives. The classes begin at 4:30 p.m. AK, 5:30 p.m. PT, 6:30 p.m. MT.
- FAMED 561 LGBTQ Health Disparities: Mondays, Oct. 2 to Dec. 4. Requirement for the Underserved Pathway.
- MED 557 Hispanic Health Disparities: Tuesdays, Oct. 3 to Dec. 5. Requirement for the Latinx Health Pathway.
- FAMED 525 African American Health Disparities, Past, Present & Future Issues: Thursdays, Sept. 28 to Dec. 7. Requirement for the Black Health Justice Pathway.
Information for Seattle-based students about physician shadowing
Students interested in extracurricular clinical experiences – shadowing – at UW Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-Montlake) may work directly with a physician. You do not have to check in with Students Affairs and the UWMC-Montlake Medical Director’s office.
Students interested in shadowing at Harborview Medical Center (HMC) must notify the Medical Director’s Office of shadowing done at HMC. Please include your full name, the academic year, physician supervisor/sponsor, and shadowing dates when notifying the HMC Medical Director’s office.
How to find a physician to shadow? Students must find physicians on their own through the various departments. Every department has a medical student program office that can be asked about availability of faculty.
Please remember to wear your badge while you are shadowing.

ICYMI: Deadline for all first-year students to complete the VA form is Sept. 1, 2023
All MS1s should complete the form at this link regarding their eligibility to participate in clinical training at the Veterans Affairs Health System (VA). This is required of all students. Students may decline to consent, but they will still need to submit a response via the form. You can see the VA FAQ for more information.
Additional info:
- To be considered for a rotation at the VA, UWSOM will need to release to the VA your current gender and country of citizenship.
- In addition to the above information, the VA also needs the UWSOM to verify your Selective Service status. To be eligible for a clerkship at the VA, all individuals assigned male at birth need to be registered with the Selective Service. Visit the Selective Service website to register for the Selective Service or to check your status.

Every month, you’ll get a tip in this newsletter to help your career planning stay on track.
You will soon get tons of emails about extracurriculars. This may seem overwhelming during FMR, but think big picture about what might interest you career-wise. If you can, try to take on a leadership position for an interest group, a volunteer project, or join a committee. Make sure you don’t overcommit, but picking one or two extracurriculars this year to pour into is a fantastic way to kick off med schoo!
Pathway applications will also open this fall and can be helpful in learning how to better serve minoritized and underserved communities. Learn more about Pathways here.
