Developing an Advanced Patient Care Clerkship

Departments and Regions that want to develop new Advanced Patient Care clerkships should reach out to the appropriate Department Advanced Patient Care Director, as well as the Director of  Advanced Patient Care Clerkships for guidance and requirements, Dr. Esther Chung.

Once a new clerkship has been planned and developed the process to create a new Advanced Patient Care Clerkship is the same as any new clerkship.

  • Complete and Submit the SOM New Clerkship Site Application for review by the Explore & Focus Committee.
  • Once approved by the Explore & Focus Committee, the appropriate department will submit the clerkship for University of Washington Curriculum approval and addition to the course catalog.
  • Once the UW Course Application Process has been completed and the course approved with upper campus, you will be contacted by the Clinical Curriculum Specialist, Gina Franco, regarding steps to finalize your newly developed and approved clerkship.

Departments and Regions planning development of existing elective clerkships to meet the Advanced Patient Care requirements should contact to the Co-Directors of the Advanced Patient Care Committee for guidance and clerkship requirements, Dr. Esther Chung.  After consulting with the APC Director, the Department completes the APC Change Form (below), which will then go through an approval process via the APC Director, Assistant Dean, and approval at the Explore & Focus Committee. Course change may require additional changes in Kuali; please work with Clinical Curriculum to see what changes may be necessary.  Once all approvals are in place, the new APC or APC Sub-I can be created in eValue, at which point Department provides availability.

Please note that changes to existing clerkships can only be made at the onset of an academic year.
