MS1 Class Information – March 10, 2022

Restorative Practices Program coming on March 21

UWSOM is working to bring restorative justice (RJ) practices to our School. Restorative Justice represents a philosophy that places the well-being of a community at the center along with the principles and practices that support well-being. It is not only responsive to situations where harm has occurred but also seeks to proactively build community connections that reduce harm and enable us to meaningfully repair harm when it occurs.

“Cultivating a restorative mindset will help us engage constructively in difficult conversations in our community and the skills acquired from RJ practice will serve you throughout your lives and careers as physicians as you have difficult conversations with your patients, their loved ones, your colleagues, and others,” said Dr. Gerald Tolbert, the interim Associate Dean for Student Affairs in his March 4 message to MS1s.

On March 21 on Zoom we are offering an Introduction to Restorative Practices followed by a small group community-building circle. If you would like to participate, please register at this link. The program will be from 9 to 11 a.m. AK, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. PT and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. MT

As Dr. Allen said in her March 2 email, UWSOM is partnering with Infinite Impact to help implement restorative practices and principles throughout our School.

“I look forward to our work together to incorporate restorative practices into the UWSOM culture,” Dr. Tolbert wrote. “It is important to have students participate in this work with us as we build a stronger community, prevent, and repair harm, and collaborate on creating antiracist change in our School.  This work is long overdue.”
