If your financial aid is on hold
This message applies if your financial aid is on hold. You will know whether your aid is on hold because there will be a message in your MyUW for 2022-23. If you don’t have a hold on aid, then this brief does not apply to you.
If you do see a hold, then your aid is on hold because your clerkships begin after the start of Spring quarter. Financial Aid has a list of these students and will automatically release the hold a week before you start. You will also not get a late fee as Financial Aid sends a list of all medical students who start late to Student Fiscal Services (SFS).
If you need funds for living expenses now, you can do a Short-Term Loan online on your MyUW. Once completed, please email Financial Aid, and we will waive the fee for you.
For 2023-2024: If you need financial aid for Summer quarter, please complete the Summer Aid Application available on your MyUW. You will first need to toggle to 2023-2024 at the top of the page and then the application will appear on the left-hand side. You will want to select “full term” for the term you are attending.
Marigold the chihuahua pleads: Please take your survey if you haven’t yet
Here is a message from Sara Kim, Ph.D., associate dean for Educational Quality Improvement: Huge thanks to 14 students who completed the survey over the past week, raising the response rate to 40% (see graph below). It will take another 104 of you to complete the survey in the next six weeks to reach the 80% goal. So even 20 responses a week would help! Please look for an email from eqi@uw.edu that contains a customized survey link for you to use.
With the exception of Montana (46 percent), all campuses increased their response rates with Wyoming recording the highest increase ( up 10 percentage points, 55 percent vs. 45 percent), followed by Seattle and Spokane (both up 7 percentage points – 38 percent vs. 31 percent and 41 percent vs. 34 percent, respectively), Alaska (up 5 percentage points, 37 percent vs. 32 percent) and Idaho (up 3 percentage points, 32 percent vs. 29 percent). I appreciate each of your voices.

Career Advising Student Advisory Board Tip of the Month
For many of you, rotations have started. As you’re going through these rotations, it’s helpful to look at the daily work you’re doing, reflect and take notes on what you like and don’t like about it. Your future you will be grateful for those notes.
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Careers in Medicine Clinical Rotation Evaluation provides a format for you to record your thoughts and opinions.
- Do you love the operating room and working with your hands?
- Do you enjoy getting to sit down with patients for conversations?
- How important is continuity of care to you?
- Do you like high adrenaline situations?
- Do you prefer working in a hospital or a clinic?
Answering these big-picture questions can help you narrow down on specialty options to explore further! Pay attention to which clerkship(s) keep you interested and inspired even when the work is tough, and you are tired.
