Earlier this year, the Washington State Legislature passed House Bill 2327 addressing sexual misconduct in institutions of higher education. The legislation’s aim is to prevent institutions of higher education from “passing the harasser” — allowing employees with histories of undisclosed sexual misconduct to move between institutions. The bill became law June 11, 2020, and includes a number of requirements that the UW must phase-in over the next three years.
Effective October 1, 2020, the UW is required to ask final candidates to sign a statement where they are instructed to disclose information regarding current or past sexual misconduct investigations and/or findings. The UW cannot hire an external applicant who has not signed the statement. This requirement applies to external candidates for all academic personnel positions.
