The program is funded by a $2 million endowment from the Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professions Training. The late U.S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson, whose name the program was established, was committed to improving the nation’s health through biomedical research. During his long career in the U.S. Senate, Magnuson was instrumental in establishing the National Institutes of Health, Medicare, and Medicaid. At least one of the six Magnuson Scholars who are selected must be preparing for or actively engaged in a career pathway related to diabetes research, its antecedents, or complications.
Eligibility:

- Students must be enrolled in a graduate program in the health professions at the University of Washington and registered for at least one credit at the time of the scholarship disbursements, which are scheduled for summer quarter 2025 and winter quarter 2026, during the 2025-26 academic year.
- Students may be nominated in consecutive years by their respective schools.
- In accordance with Washington State Law, at least one Magnuson Scholar must be in a career pathway preparing for or engaged in research related to diabetes, its antecedents, or complications.
Selection Process:
- Magnuson Scholars Program will make the final review and selection of the scholars based on the schools’ nominees meeting eligibility and selection criteria, upon their academic performance and/or promise, and the student’s potential contributions to research in the health sciences.
- Per the criteria established by the Magnuson Scholarship, at least one recipient from the six Health Sciences schools must prepare for or actively engage in a career pathway related to diabetes research.
