Peer to Peer: Road to Residency Tip of the Month

This advice is for all MS3 students and includes first generation and BIPOC student lenses.

MS3: As you’re continuing to plan out your fourth-year schedules, here are a few things to consider!

If you are considering/exploring various specialties, make sure you schedule them early (spring, early summer)! You can always save neurology and emergency medicine for last if you don’t think you’ll pursue them as a career.
If you’re considering a competitive specialty and you haven’t spoken with your specialty career advisor yet, make this a priority between now and spring. These upcoming months need to be really strategic (research, Step 2 prep, extracurriculars). Check the Specialty Guides for contact information.
Ifyour specialtyrecommends away rotations, take time over break to look at VSLO, their FAQs, and how away rotationswork, including scholarships advertised at certain programs. The UWSOM Registration Team has put together a great compilation of resources regarding away rotations on their website. (In the months ahead, VLSO electives will be updated by programs and UWSOM Registration will update their website on the 2025-2026 away application cycle.)
