Dr. Friedrich receives Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)’s Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award

The recipient: Jeff Friedrich, M.D., is the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Surgery, Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery, a Professor of Orthopedics and Adjunct Professor of Urology and was the Plastic Surgery residency program director from 2011-2024; he is also a graduate of the UW School of Medicine Plastic Surgery Residency program (2006) (https://www.uwmedicine.org/bios/jeffrey-friedrich)

The award: The ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award recognizes program directors who have fostered innovation and improvement in their programs and served as exemplary role models for residents and fellows.  Dr. Friedrich is one of 10 program directors selected this year out of 13,393 residency and fellowship programs accredited by the ACGME. Excerpts from the nomination packet for Dr. Friedrich:

      • From the nomination: “Dr. Friedrich lives out Parker Palmer’s courage to teach philosophy with his daily work for our plastic surgery residency. He has the heart necessary to necessary to sustain himself and others around him as he examines his own insights and ignorance, and the courage to change the learning environment to enable all his trainees to achieve their educational goals.”
      • And from the plastic surgery trainees: “Dr. Friedrich is an incredible leader, mentor, and educator who empowers those around him, and he is truly beloved by every resident who has come through this program in the past decade. He invests in getting to know each resident on a deeply personal level and is a major driving force behind the tight-knit, family feel of our program.”

Spokane’s Dr. Hauxwell honored as unsung hero

The 2024 President’s Unsung Hero Award, which recognizes the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) member who contributes extraordinary service to the profession and our community, was presented to Clint Hauxwell, MD, Spokane primary care physician with MultiCare Health System Rockwood Clinic and co-director of Foundations of Clinical Medicine at UWSOM in Spokane.

Dr. Hauxwell was honored for his long legacy of strong leadership, dedication to service, and contributions to the betterment of health care through his teaching, his sponsoring students in his clinic, and his service on UW faculty.
