Understanding UWSOM’s mistreatment policy: Promoting a Respectful Learning Environment (Element 3.6: Student Mistreatment)

UWSOM upholds a strong commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment. As outlined in 1.4 Student Mistreatment Policy , mistreatment is defined prohibited behaviors, including humiliation, discrimination based on identity or beliefs, and offensive remarks or actions. Students are encouraged to report any mistreatment or other serious concerns about their learning environment.

UWSOM offers multiple reporting options, such as contacting Melinda Frank, Director of the Learning Environment, using the Learning Environment Reporting Tool (aLERT) tool for anonymous or self-identified feedback, submitting concerns in any UWSOM evaluations, or speaking directly with any UWSOM dean.

Additionally, faculty, staff, and residents, as well as UWSOM students who might also wish to make a formal report to an entity that is external to the School of Medicine, can use the UW Medicine Bias Reporting Tool to report incidents of racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of bias that negatively impact the learning and working environment.

In May 2024, the Education Quality Improvement (EQI) team published a CQI Spotlight titled Fostering a Safe Learning Environment: Progress and Opportunities in Addressing Student Mistreatment. After the upcoming ISA survey closes, EQI plans to report the data and share updates on continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.

We want to create a culture of respect and integrity at UWSOM. If you have concerns, speak up through these channels. Your voice is vital to building a positive learning environment for all.
