 Update on TTR:

You received an email the afternoon of Monday, March 4, with updates about Transition to Residency. Here are some highlights, but refer to the whole email for all details you’ll want to know:

As a reminder, this year’s course will consist of two weeks from Monday, May 13 to Thursday, May 23: the first week is virtual and the second week is in-person in Seattle. A reminder to start thinking about the following:

Enrollment will occur in mid-April at which point you will receive an individualized schedule. For week 1 (virtual) you will be in class most of the day, so please plan to be in a quiet, distraction-free location to get the most out of these sessions. Most sessions will require virtual participation.

Travel and Lodging

Your day-to-day in-person (week 2) schedule will vary based on the specialty-specific sessions you are enrolled in. We ask that you plan to be available in Seattle from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT from Monday, May 20 through Thursday, May 23. Once you are enrolled in sessions in the spring, you will receive an individualized schedule and know what your day-to-day will look like.

Plenary – More Speaker Nominations Needed!

Foundations site plenary speakers are the closest thing the UWSOM has to “graduation speakers.” We count on you to nominate your colleagues for this amazing and important honor. If you have not, please take a couple of minutes to nominate a speaker. You can nominate people from your Foundations site or others.  .

Story Slam – More Storytellers Needed!

Story Slam is a unique opportunity for students to share their unique experiences in medical school in a storytelling fashion with their class. Patterned after the podcast, The Moth, we are looking for a wide range of stories that reflect the authentic experiences of this graduating class. Please think about yourself or consider nudging a classmate that you know has an important story to tell. Here is the sign-up link.

Update on your GQ survey & reminder that you’re not just helping the school, but earning a chance to win a prize

Here is a message from Sara Kim, Ph.D., research professor, surgery, associate dean for Educational Quality Improvement: Thank you to those of you who helped raise the school’s response rate to the AAMC Graduation Questionnaire to 22 percent (up 10 percentage points over last week). The national rate is 30 percent. Please see the graph to compare regional response rates. Montana and Idaho have exceeded a 30 percent response mark at 35 percent and 32 percent, respectively, followed by Spokane (22 percent), Wyoming (20 percent), Seattle (16 percent), and Alaska (14 percent).

We are offering exciting incentives this year in pursuit of our goal of an 85 percent response. Please refer to the table below that specifies how $20 gift cards will be raffled based on the size of each campus-based cohort. We will draw names when the survey closes. It’s important that you keep the receipt issued by AAMC to receive the gift card (or you can forward it to if you would like us to keep it in case your name is drawn).

Campus # of Gift Cards ($20) raffled if Campus Response Rates Reach 60% TOTAL # of $20 Gift Cards if Campus Response Rates Reach 85% If Campus Response Rates Reach 100%
Seattle 11 22 Any unused gift cards will be raffled to the campus cohort(s) reaching 100%
Spokane 7 14
Wyoming 2 4
Alaska 2 4
Montana 3 6
Idaho 4 8

Important note about prizes: According to the UW policy, student employees (e.g., tutors, research assistants, hourly workers, etc.) cannot receive a gift card. If you win the raffle as a student employee, we will send alternative items of $20 value from Amazon.

To find the survey link, please look for an email sent by AAMC (

Note: You don’t have to take the survey right away, and you will still have the chance to win a prize. Be on the lookout for an email from the Financial Aid team about a March 28 online exit interview and loan repayment workshop that might be helpful in your response to the GQ survey. If you plan to attend this webinar, you don’t need to complete the survey until after that. If you are not planning to attend this event at all, then feel free to take the survey now.

Thank you so much for your time and input into the survey!

ICYMI: A request related to Transition to Residency

Managing behavioral emergencies, related to your upcoming Transition to Residency later this year: This request comes from Clinton Olivas, M.D., a UWSOM internal medicine resident, who is working with faculty member Vincent Raikhel, M.D., on a medical curriculum about managing inpatient behavioral emergencies such as “Code Gray” responses at UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center.

This 5- to 10-minute survey asks about your experiences, knowledge and perspectives around this topic.

“The team is planning to have their first session on this topic as part of your Transition to Residency course later this year, with live simulated environments for you to practice key skills. Your input is essential for our ongoing development of this session, as we want to highlight what would be most helpful to you all – we deeply appreciate your participation,” Dr. Olivas said.

In case you missed it, here is the previous newsletter for MS4s.

Have a wonderful week!
