MS2 Class Information – Nov. 2, 2023

Update about Patient Care scheduling

This message applies to MS2s who are entering the Patient Care phase of the curriculum in Spring 2024 or later (except WRITE and Olympia LIC students). Here’s what the Registration and Learning Environment teams have to say: Good news: The scheduling program, EVOS, is running, so we’re getting closer to finishing up your Patient Care schedules!

Of course, we’ll let you know once those are available but please understand it will still be a while.

Before then, here are two things to know:

  • If you have Disability Resources for Students (DRS) location-based accommodations, please send your accommodation letter from DRS to dbstone1@uw.edu.  We have a list, but want to make sure it doesn’t overlook anyone.
  • If you have any safety concerns about rotating through certain cities or towns and wish to talk to someone, please schedule a meeting with Melinda Frank, director of the Learning Environment, by Nov. 9 using this tool: https://uwsom-studentaffairs.as.me/schedule.php.

Remember that a swap/trade period will be open to all once schedules are released. More about this later.

We know you’re excited about this next phase of your education – we’re excited as well!

Survey update – more on a chance to win prizes!

Gabe Sarah, M.D, associate dean for Student Affairs and Sara Kim, Ph.D., associate dean for Educational Quality Improvement, thank those who completed the national survey and helped raise the school’s response rate to 24 percent, up 7 percentage points from last week.  You continue to exceed the national rate, which is 19 percent. AAMC re-sent the survey link on Wednesday.

The largest weekly increase was from Idaho students (32 percent vs. 20), followed by Montana (38 percent vs. 28). Seattle, Wyoming, and Alaska rates increased by 5 percentage points (Seattle: 17 percent vs. 12, Wyoming: 30 percent vs. 25, Alaska (26 percent vs. 21), followed by Spokane (20 percent vs. 17).

Here are raffle prizes as thanks and incentives. Please save the survey completion receipt for use if your name is drawn:

• 3 wireless phone chargers ($20 worth)
• 2 pairs of wireless earbuds ($50 worth)
• 2 wireless mouses ($35 worth)
• 5 insulated Thermos travel coffee mugs ($20 worth)

Thank you all for your time!

Update on the 5-minute fall survey

Dr. Kim adds: Thank you so much for completing the 5-min internal survey during your class time. We appreciated your time. As you see below, you helped reach a 75 percent mark at the school level.

We could use more help from our Seattle, Alaska and Idaho students. Could you please consider taking five minutes and completing the survey that was emailed to you today?

Every voice will help us with the accreditation report and contribute to ongoing quality improvement.

Tip of the Month” from the Career Advising Student Advisory Board

You’re almost done with the classroom portion of medical school! During this last bit of pre-clinical med school, continue going to interest group events, volunteering, and doing other extracurriculars. If you haven’t gotten to shadow some of the specialties that you wanted, get them done before the end of the year. Life is busy during clerkships, so these things are harder to do. Of course, prioritize your blocks first, and don’t spread yourself too thin. 😊
