Disability accommodations update

Here is a message from Gabe Sarah, M.D., associate dean for Student Affairs: We are acutely aware of the extended period of time many are waiting to have their intake appointment with Disability Resources for Students (DRS) at UW. For this reason, we have been approved to implement the following temporary testing accommodations:

A UWSOM student who can produce evidence of an exam accommodation appointment with upper campus DRS will receive 50 percent more time for testing plus a reduced distraction environment until they have their meeting with DRS and for two weeks after said meeting, or until DRS makes a determination about your accommodations, whichever comes first.

Some things to note:

  1. You must forward your appointment confirmation in order to qualify. This appointment can only be secured once you have submitted all necessary materials to DRS. You will not qualify for temporary accommodations unless you have a confirmed appointment with DRS.
  2. You must send the confirmation proof to all of the following in ONE email:
    1. Dr. Gabriel Sarah, Sarah Wood, and SOM Testing Services. gesarah@uw.edusewood@uw.edu, and somtests@uw.edu
  3. For Monday exams, you must send the materials by 11 a.m. AK, noon PT and 1 p.m. MT on the Thursday BEFORE the exam you’d like the accommodations to begin for. For example, if your test is Monday, August 21, you must submit your materials to us by 11 a.m. AK, noon PT and 1 p.m. MT on Thursday, August 17. Otherwise, they will be effective for the NEXT test.
  4. For Friday exams, you must send the materials by 11 a.m. AK, noon PT and 1 p.m. MT on the Tuesday BEFORE the exam you’d like the accommodations to begin for. For example, if your test is Friday, August 18, you must submit your materials to us by 11 a.m. AK, noon PT and 1 p.m. MT on Tuesday, August 15. Otherwise, they will be effective for the NEXT test.
  5. These accommodations will AUTOMATICALLY cease two weeks after your scheduled DRS appointment listed in the materials you send us. They can be replaced with the DRS recommendations at that time. If you are NOT granted DRS accommodations, then these temporary accommodations will no longer be applicable.
  6. PLEASE do not send us any documentation that lists any medical issues, any reference to your disability, or anything involving protected health information. We do not need any of this. All we need is a copy of your appointment confirmation. If said confirmation includes any of this information, please black it out or edit it out before you send it.
  7. At this time, we are only approved to offer the testing-related accommodations listed above.

Please let Sarah Wood and me know if you have any questions
