Schedule Intro to Career Planning Appointment

If you are an MS1 who has yet to schedule your MS1 Intro to Career Planning appointment with your dedicated Career Advisor (Linh Ngo, Sarah Thomson, Tonja Brown), please make a priority to do so anytime now through the end of May 2025. We look forward to working with you in the months ahead.

Your steps before you meet with your Career Advisor – plan about 90 minutes for prep:

  1. Schedule your MS1 Intro to Career Planning appointment via CAS: https://uwsom-careeradv.12twenty.com/SignUp/Student
  2. Watch the 3 Videos: Approaching Career Planning & Extracurriculars – 20 minutes:  https://education.uwmedicine.org/career-advising/choosing-a-career/explore/#exploreresources
  3. Complete these two AAMC Careers in Medicine self-assessments – 40 minutes:
    1. MSPI  (Medical Specialty Preference Inventory)
    2. PVIPS (Physician Values in Practice Scale)
    3. Log back into CAS and upload the two assessment reports to your appointment – your career advisor will review them before your meeting

    4.   Review website content – 20 minutes:

    1. Choose two specialties that you are interested in from your MSPI assessment report and read the Specialty Guide for each
    2. Choosing A Career –including Foundations Year 1 Career Planning Timeline and Explore Your Career

Peer to Peer: Tip of the Month from Career Advising

This advice is for all students and includes first generation and BIPOC student lenses.

MS1: We hope you enjoyed Spring break! Did you get a chance to use your AAMC account to take this fun assessment and see what specialties align with your interests? If you already have the results, discuss them with your College Mentor and your career advisor. Your results can help you guide your volunteering, research, leadership, and shadowing experiences. Don’t forget to meet with your career advisor by mid-May if you haven’t already,
