      • For example, students who anticipate sitting for the exam by May, you might choose (April-June or May-July).
      • *Please make sure you have completed and remediated all clerkships and consult with your learning specialist about the best time for you to take the exam if you have questions or concerns.

  • Once students finish the application for Step 2 CK, they will receive a Certification of Identification (CID) Form to complete.
  • Check documentation for any mistakes before submitting CID form.
  • Upload completed CID form here. (External link – Microsoft Form) – Please do not mail in a physical copy.
  • The names on your identification must exactly match the names on your permit. The only acceptable differences are variations in capitalization; the presence of a middle name, middle initial, or suffix on one document and its absence on the other; or the presence of a middle name on one and middle initial on the other.
  • If your name is misspelled or differs from your name as it appears on your identification, contact your registration entity immediately (NBME).
  • **NOTE**: The UWSOM Registration Office will submit the CID form to NBME on your behalf and verify your enrollment.
4. Receive a Scheduling Permit
  • Once NBME has processed your application and approved all paperwork, you will receive a scheduling permit via email.
  • The scheduling permit will allow you to choose a test date with Prometric.
  • Scheduling permits can take 2-4 weeks in total to receive.
  • Students who are applying for accommodations will have a longer wait period for their scheduling permit.
  • Students cannot schedule a test date until the scheduling permit is received.

Applying for Testing Accommodations:

  • If you have a documented disability covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) you must notify the USMLE in writing each time you apply for a Step examination for which you require test accommodations.
  • Students who require test accommodations are encouraged to begin their process with the USMLE as soon as possible. Application for testing accommodations occurs at the time of registration. You can submit documentation later, if needed.
  • Due to the length of the testing accommodation application process, some students may be unable to choose a test date by the deadline. If you have concerns about making this deadline, please notify your Learning Specialist before the deadline.
Documentation:
Important Considerations:
  • UWSOM testing accommodations do not ensure NBME testing accommodations.
  • After receipt of documentation, the NBME can take 60-90 days, to respond with their decision regarding approval or denial of accommodations.
  • Until you have a response from the NBME, you will not be granted a scheduling permit, therefore will not be able to select a test date.
  • For questions regarding NBME testing accommodations please contact the NBME Disability Services disabilityservices@nbme.org
Email or Meet with DRS:
  • Before contacting DRS, please read about the things DRS will assist with under the “Steps for Requesting Accommodation through USMLE” section of our DRS Resources webpage.
  • Email DRS (uwdrs@uw.edu) your CPTA form (you will need a USMLE ID and official signature to complete the form) and/or personal statement if you would like feedback.
  •  Schedule a time to meet with DRS as soon as possible if you have additional questions or need additional support with your personal statement or CPTA form, please be aware that wait times can be long.
Decision Appeals:
  • If you submitted a request for test accommodations and received a decision letter from the NBME, you may accept the decision and move forward with choosing an exam date or request that the NBME reconsider their decision.
  • If you decide to appeal the decision, Complete the reconsideration request form and contact DRS for letter of support.
  • Please note that an appeal will take additional time for a reconsideration decision.
**NOTE**: Due to high volumes of student appointments, you may not receive an appointment date with DRS that matches with your preferred timeline and may lead to major delays. Consider scheduling an appointment early, if possible.
