PSYCHIATRY LEARNING OBJECTIVES

ACADEMIC YEAR Spring 2024 to Winter 2025

  1. Demonstrate the ability to ask in a sensitive manner about the following:
    • Suicide and suicidal ideation
    • Homicidal ideation
    • Abuse
    • Drug and alcohol habits
  2. Perform two complete oral presentations that include all the components of a typical psychiatric admission note with an assessment and evidence based differential diagnosis and treatment plan
  3. Identify the major indications for and side effects of medications from each of the major classes used in psychiatry
  4. Identify an area of knowledge gap related to the field of psychiatry, appraise the scientific literature and give a presentation of the topic
  5. Demonstrate the ability to accurately identify, understand and reflect the emotions a patient is experiencing
  6. Demonstrate compassion, integrity and respect for others
  7. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary mental treatment team
  8. Recognize that ambiguity is a part of the provision of clinical care
  9. Demonstrate respect for patient privacy and autonomy
  10. Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical principles related to decisional capacity evaluation and voluntary vs involuntary psychiatric treatment
