Alaska WWAMI recently participated in the Alaska Interior Medical Education Summit (AIMES) in Fairbanks, an event for students exploring both traditional and non-traditional pathways into healthcare and medicine. Attendees ranged from high school students to adults considering a career change, creating an engaging environment full of questions about what medical training in Alaska can look like.
Alaska WWAMI Clinical Program Coordinator Ciera Stafford joined Foundations Professor and PreMed Advisor Dr. Shannon Uffenbeck on a panel introducing Alaska’s MD programs and outlining the qualities admissions committees prioritize.
Stafford said the sessions were shaped by audience curiosity.
“The discussions were organic and productive,” she said. “The attendees had excellent questions. We were able to highlight the strengths of WWAMI and connect with potential applicants, letting them know what to expect if they attend the program.”
One of Stafford’s most memorable moments was the opportunity to present alongside Dr. Uffenbeck.
“Her expertise, professionalism, care, and approachability are beyond match,” Stafford said. “She was knowledgeable but also had genuine interest in each attendee’s story and interests, including what they are most nervous about and the questions they have,” Stafford said.
By the end of the day, Alaska WWAMI helped demystify the complexity of the WWAMI model and showcased the many ways students can personalize their medical education. The conversations left future applicants feeling better informed and more confident about pursuing careers in medicine.
