This month, in recognition of Veterans Day, Idaho WWAMI is honoring Dr. Suzanne Allen, whose years of service in the U.S. Air Force helped shape her path as a physician, educator, and leader in medical education. From a military clinic to her current role as Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Allen’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to service, one that continues to inspire the WWAMI community and future physicians across the Northwest. Her experience in the military shaped the trajectory of her career in profound ways.
Before beginning her academic leadership career, Dr. Allen served her country as a physician in the U.S. Air Force from June 1992 to September 1999. She was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., and Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota, with a temporary duty assignment at Minot Air Force Base in Minot, North Dakota.
“The Air Force was kind to pay for me to attend medical school which I greatly appreciate,” Dr. Allen said. “I loved taking care of my patients. Military members
and their families are committed to service to our country. It is a wonderful community to be part of and care for!”
Her time in uniform not only broadened her perspective as a physician but also opened unexpected doors that would ultimately guide her toward a career in medical education.
“I received great on the job training while I was in the Air Force as well as leadership training,” she said. “I was given the opportunity to teach at a residency program which has led to my career as a medical educator. I likely would not be in medical education if I had not been offered that opportunity in the Air Force.”
Now serving as Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs, Dr. Allen works across the five-state WWAMI region to advance the excellence of medical education and strengthen healthcare access in rural and regional communities. She also holds a clinical professor faculty position within the Department of Family Medicine and continues to care for patients and teach at Full Circle Health Family Medicine Residency in Boise, Idaho.
For Dr. Allen, Veterans Day is a time to reflect on the meaning of that shared service.
“It is an opportunity to recognize, thank and appreciate all members of the armed services who are currently serving and who have served and sacrificed for our country and our freedom.”
