Participants Wanted: Study on Impacts of Home Dermatology Residency Programs on Student Perceptions of Dermatology as a Specialty
This study investigates how structural factors—such as access to resources and mentorship—influence medical students’ specialty choices. In competitive fields like dermatology, it is important that career paths reflect genuine interest rather than institutional advantage. By examining the barriers faced by students without home programs, this research aims to promote equity and ensure all students have fair opportunities to pursue their desired specialties.

Action Required for Disability Accommodations for Clerkship Locations (If Needed)
Students who require clerkship location accommodations to manage their personal medical conditions/disabilities must apply for and be approved by the University’s Disability Resources for Students (DRS) office prior to July 14. Because it can take 2-5 weeks, sometimes longer, to be approved for accommodation with DRS, you should start the process as soon as possible (and no later than June 27).
- If you are not currently registered with DRS, please fill out a “new student application” and submit your documentation via the DRS services website.
- If you are already receiving accommodation through DRS and want to discuss clerkship location, please schedule an appointment with Kowan Russell, uwdrs@uw.edu.
Additional information about the steps for requesting accommodation is outlined on the UW DRS “Getting Started” website.
Peer to Peer: Tip of the Month from Career Advising
This advice is for all students and includes first generation and BIPOC student lenses.
If you have not met with Career Advising, you can find out the best time to meet with a Specialty Career Advisor (SCA) from the guidance provided in the Specialty Guides.
Many of you won’t need to connect with an SCA until after starting your clinical phase. For other students, especially those interested in very competitive specialties, it is important to get on the SCA’s radar early; make sure you read the Specialty Guide and bring specific questions. Use the Guidelines for Connecting with SCA website to prepare for your meeting. Be ready to share your summer plans with them and ask for suggestions, such as presenting your summer project at a specific conference, involvement in the department, more shadowing, volunteering, etc.
