Advancing Scholarly Opportunities – An Ongoing Commitment at UWSOM (Element 3.2 Community of Scholars/Research Opportunities)

UWSOM remains committed to fulfilling the goals of Element 3.2 Community of Scholars/Research Opportunities, fostering a robust scholarly environment for its students. Over the past five years, the school has taken significant steps to expand and enhance access to research opportunities.

The Triple I (Independent Investigative Inquiry) program engages second-year students in summer research projects through Discovery, Integration, Global Health Immersion, and the Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP). Recent improvements include added research opportunities (85 hybrid/remote projects last year), a revamped research database, and the online Triple I Information Hub for MS1. There are also exciting new offerings within the Triple I program. The Clinical and Translational Research Pathway (CTRP) allows students to engage in longitudinal research throughout medical school. Additionally, a new RUOP/Discovery hybrid pilot integrates community-based research opportunities with clinical experiences.

The recent Independent Student Analysis (ISA) survey results show a consistent 90% agreement across all cohorts that students have access to research/scholarly opportunities, underscoring the impact of these initiatives.

For MS1 students, weekly Zoom office hours will be available in December while applications are open. For all Triple I programs, the application submission deadline is January 3, 2025.
