Reading Assignments Accessibility
What
Replace/select accessible Reading Assignments (e.g. PDFs of outside articles) with web-based versions.
Why
Students who use screen readers encounter many difficulties with PDFs, which are difficult to remediate.
Focus for 2025-26 Academic Year
- Convert links to all third-party pdf readings to web-based versions (UW resource: Reading Assignments)
- If not available, work with subject librarian to purchase for the school OR identify an alternative
Example
- In R&R Day 19, Session 3, Pre-class Required, replace the “They Decide Who Lives Who Dies” PDF link with a direct link to the online article at nephJC.com.

A More Detailed Why
Converting PDFs into links to web-based readings significantly enhances accessibility for all users. Online text is easier to navigate with assistive technologies such as screen readers, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards. Unlike static PDFs, web-based formats allow for responsive design, enabling text resizing, high-contrast modes, and compatibility across devices. Links also reduce technical barriers—users don’t need to download large files or have specific software installed. This approach creates an inclusive experience, ensuring that learners with visual, cognitive, or mobility challenges can access materials seamlessly.
