Career Advising Student Advisory Board Tip of the Month
This advice is for all MS1 students and includes first generation and BIPOC student lenses.
If you haven’t met with your career advisor yet, schedule an appointment by the end of May! The only exception is March 16-20, when the Career Advisors will be busy supporting MS4s with SOAP/Match Week. As you prepare for your advising meeting, read the “Learn About this Specialty” and “Foundations Phase Planning” sections of the Specialty Guides for two specialties that you are interested in.
Additionally, as spring quarter approaches, you may want to explore the non-clinical electives offered. These electives are not required, however, they can be a way to enhance your medical education. When deciding if a non-clinical elective makes sense for you, prioritize your health and wellness, your academic progress, and then consider if the elective options are feasible with your schedule and in line with the knowledge, skills and experiences you are looking to gain. You can learn more about non-clinical elective selection on Career Advising’s Elective Selection website, and by watching a short video on Frequently Asked Elective Questions for MS1s on the Elective Selection FAQ page.
