WBAs and Mindset: Exploring Perception of the WBA in Growth and Development

Want to help enhance student experiences with workplace-based assessments (WBAs)? A research team led by Columbia University is asking MS3 students currently in patient care clerkships to participate in a UW IRB approved study. Researchers hope to explore how students perceive WBAs in supporting growth and development of clinical skills and how perceptions evolve over time. This longitudinal study will involve both brief interviews and electronic diaries.

Participants will be offered a $100 gift card after participating in the study interviews and completing a specified number of diary entries.

Details:

  • Participation is completely voluntary.
  • Diary entries and interview responses will be anonymous.
  • Participation identifiers will not be shared with UW and will not impact participants’ grades.
  • The session will be audiotaped for transcription purposes only.
  • The interviews will be conducted remotely.

Those interested should email Maggie Costich at mac2464@cumc.columbia.edu.

ICYMI: WWAMI Colleges Seeks Rising MS4s to Lead Peer Advising Sessions

The WWAMI Colleges program is seeking rising MS4s to lead vertical (peer) advising sessions on Wednesday June 25, 2025, from 11-12pm AK, 12-1pm PT, 1-2pm MT via Zoom during Clinical Integrations Week.

If you are interested, please sign up: sign-up link. The Colleges team will reach out in early June to coordinate.

The goal of these vertical advising sessions is to give students across all 4+ years an opportunity to connect, ask questions of senior classmates and offer support and guidance. Participants will be provided with a rough facilitator’s guide with basic prompts and loose structure, and staff/faculty back-up — so it should be easy to lead and require minimal prep time.

These sessions will be entirely within Foundations campus cohorts (e.g. only Alaska Foundations students on the Alaska Advising Zoom link). There will be break-out rooms available so larger campuses can allow students space for smaller group conversations.

It should be fun and meaningful to support your colleagues and junior students – thank you for considering this leadership opportunity.

Peer to Peer: Road to Residency Tip-of-the-Month from Career Advising

This advice is for all students and includes first generation and BIPOC student lenses.

If you haven’t already, draft your CV and get it reviewed through Career Advising’s CV Review Session here — it’s super helpful!

Also, now can be a great time to start brainstorming ideas for your personal statement. All students use the Personal Statement Worksheet for their writing process. It is helpful to have your personal statement started early so you know your personal and specialty/s narrative well when asked about it on your rotations in your desired field. You’ll also be able to give the statement to your letter of recommendation writers, so they can write more personal letters. They may even offer feedback! Of course, you’ll add more to the personal statement after your summer rotations, but you can get started on it now using the Career Advising resources. During Integration Week in June, there will be a required Personal Statement workshop for everyone applying to Match 2026 (see information in: Residency Application Personal Statement Review Service above).
