SOM Telehealth Program for Medical Students
The SOM-Husky Health Telehealth Program aims to increase medical student access to healthcare while on clinical rotations. It is a collaborative program between the UW School of Medicine, the Student Committee on Healthcare Access (SCoHA) and UW Husky Health to redress some of the challenges faced by medical students when finding healthcare and navigating insurance when rotating outside their home state.
Two Husky Health physicians are licensed to provide telehealth services to medical students in all 5 WWAMI states.
For First-Time Patients
- Call 206-658-1011
- Identify yourself as a University of Washington medical student and would like to request a telehealth appointment.
- For telehealth appointments when you are outside of Washington state, you will be limited to the provider(s) that are licensed to provide care in the state that you are currently residing in.
For Returning Patients
- Call 206-658-1011 or message one of the designated Husky Health providers through MyChart. After your initial visit, they are typically listed as part of your care team.

Unsure If You Need an Appointment
If you are not sure if you need an appointment, call 206-658-1011 and the on-call nurse will help you decide.
Husky Health is open Monday-Friday, during regular business hours (typically 8am-5pm PT). Specific hours of operation do vary by the day of the week so please check their website for current hours of operation. Husky Health is not open on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
If you have an urgent concern that occurs after-hours, medical students may contact the on-call nurse for free, unlimited medical advice through the community care line at 206-520-7511 (just remain on the line; do NOT press 1 for the virtual clinic). This service is included in your student activities fee and there are no additional fees to utilize it.
Husky Health provides information on the most common insurances that they work with on their website, however, the most definitive way to know if your insurance is accepted is to call your insurance company directly.
Husky Health also has a patient navigator who can assist with insurance questions through phone and/or video appointments. Call Husky Health at 206-658-1011 to set up an appointment with the patient navigator.
As of December 2022, Husky Health does not contract with:
- Kaiser HMO
- Community Health Plan of Washington
- Lifewise plans purchased through the health insurance marketplace
- Coordinated care plans purchased through the health insurance marketplace
- Out-of-state private plans purchased through the health insurance marketplace
- Out-of-state Medicaid plans
Costs will vary depending on your usage, respective insurance plan, and what services you require.
Students receive one free Husky Health visit during each quarter that the student is registered for coursework. Students must be registered (paying tuition for that given quarter) to receive this benefit. The cost for this visit is covered by the student activities fee that students pay to the UW each quarter that they are enrolled.
- Note: Husky Health will initially bill your health insurance if it is one they contract with and then any fees not covered by your health insurance will be forgiven.
The free Husky Health visit entitles enrolled students to one visit with a medical provider for a problem or concern per quarter OR for a pre-travel consultation. This visit can be in-person, via telephone, or via telehealth. Additional services such as lab tests, immunizations, imaging, x-rays, and/or medication are billed to the student’s insurance plan. The student is responsible for any cost not covered by their insurance plan.
Additional financial information about telehealth costs for medical students is available here on the SCoHA Telehealth and Financial FAQ.
Prescriptions prescribed by Husky Health can be covered at out-of-state pharmacies if the pharmacy is contracted with the student’s insurance plan (e.g. CVS is contracted with Applecare, which is Washington state’s Medicaid plan), however, the most definitive way to know is to call your insurance company directly.
As of December 2022, it is still to be determined if Husky Health can mail prescriptions to pharmacies through the telehealth program.
If you have non-urgent questions about Husky Health and prescriptions, contact SCoHA directly. They are working on a plan to better address needed prescriptions while out of state and/or on Medicaid.
