Thread Competency
The Foundations Phase of the UWSOM Curriculum includes recurring content integrated throughout the basic science blocks, known as threads. Starting with the Entering Year 2017 class, the three threads are Anatomy & Embryology, Pharmacology, and Histology & Pathology. A grade for thread performance does not appear on a student’s transcript, but students do need to demonstrate competency on each thread over each term in order to fulfill their graduation requirements.
For the purposes of evaluating thread competency, the Foundations Phase terms are defined as follows:
- Term 1 includes the Fundamentals of Medical Science & Research (FMR), Infections & Immunity (I&I), and Cancer, Hormones, & Blood (CHB) blocks.
- Final competency is determined in December of the 1st year.
- Term 2 includes the Muscles, Joints, Bones, & Skin (MJBS), Cardiovascular Systems (CVS), Respiration & Regulation (R&R), and Head, Neck, & Gut (HNG) blocks.
- Final competency is determined in June of the 1st year.
- Term 3 includes the Mind, Brain, & Behavior (MBB) and Reproduction & Development (R&D) blocks.
- Final competency is determined in December of the 2nd year.
Terms for E22 and later
As part of the normal block exams, students will be tested on questions tagged for each thread. While these questions contribute to the block grade, they also count toward the cumulative thread score for each term. Students demonstrate competency in threads by achieving a score of 70% or more on these questions over the duration of the term. Even if a student’s performance in a thread dips below 70% for a particular block, if their average score at the end of the term is above 70%, they are considered to have achieved competency.
Students can access their cumulative thread scores in the Student Performance Dashboard.
Students will be notified multiple times about how many thread questions there are:
Term: Testing Services will send out an estimate of the total number of thread questions in each of the blocks in a term at the beginning of the term.
Block: Testing Services will send out a better estimate of the total number of thread questions on each exam at the beginning of each block.
Exam: Testing Services will send out the exact number of thread questions on each exam the day prior to the exam.
If a student finishes a term with a thread score below the 70% bar for competency, they may need to complete a remediation course. For more information, see the Foundations Phase Remediation page.
