UW hosts Virtual Diversity Recruitment Town Hall on Sept. 5

The University of Washington’s Network of Underrepresented Residents & Fellows (UW NURF) and Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) cordially invites you to participate in their Virtual Diversity Recruitment Town Hall on Thursday, Sept. 5. The event starts at 5 p.m. AK, 6 p.m. PT, 7 p.m. MT.

This event welcomes prospective applicants from underrepresented/disadvantaged backgrounds and allies with the goal to introduce them to the University of Washington graduate opportunities and discuss some of the most frequently asked questions. There will be specialty specific zoom sessions at the end of the event for you to interact with residents and faculty with the programs that most interest you.

Please RSVP on the following form so you can receive the zoom link as the date approaches: https://forms.office.com/r/tPHrexhUtV For questions, please contact Nora Coronado (ncorona@uw.edu).

On behalf of all of us in Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs, we thank you for your sustained engagement with the survey. Recognizing how busy you are with your clinical training, we revised the target goal to a 70 percent response rate. As of last week, those of you who have filled out the survey helped us reach this goal. Thank you.

We will raffle all unused gift cards so look out for emails from eqi@uw.edu in case your name is drawn.

It was a privilege to work with your class over the past months.

Opportunities outside of UW Medicine

Residency in Philadelphia: The Offices of Graduate Medical Education and Diversity Inclusion Initiatives invite Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) medical students to a Sept. 3 webinar if they might be interested in learning about residency training programs at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Gain firsthand knowledge from program directors and residents about life in Philadelphia, graduate medical education, as well as  diversity, equity, and inclusion activities. Learn more from the event flyer.

Residency in New Orleans: LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine is hosting an event on Aug. 30 with a similar purpose so students can explore opportunities there. Learn more from the LSU flyer.

Peer to Peer: Road to Residency Tip of the Month

Explore and Focus scheduling comes up pretty quickly in the fall for MS3s. Start looking in the Explore & Focus Clerkship Catalog soon to see what  options might be possible, and also talk to students ahead of you to learn about their experiences and get advice BEFORE the scheduling process begins. Watch Career Advising’s session last month on Early Career Planning for the Explore & Focus Phase and/or see the slide deck for a preview of 4th year career planning steps in the next six months.

The Guide to 4th Year Planning website has all the information in one place to help you understand how to plan your upcoming Explore & Focus phase. The Explore & Focus Clerkships website is a great resource to learn about electives, APCs and Sub-Is.
