Career Advising Student Advisory Board Tip of the Month

This advice is for all MS1 students and includes first generation and BIPOC student lenses.

Most of you have already met with your dedicated SOM Career Advisor at this point. For the specialties you are considering, you can find out the best time to meet with the faculty Specialty Career Advisor (SCA) by reviewing the guidance provided in the Specialty Guides.

Most of you won’t need to connect with an SCA until after starting your clinical phase. For some students, especially those interested in very competitive specialties, it is important to get on the SCA’s radar early, by the summer, ideally. Make sure you read the Specialty Guides before you reach out to a SCA and bring specific questions. Use the Guidelines for Connecting with SCA website to prepare for your meeting. Be ready to share your summer plans with them and ask if they have any suggestions, such as presenting your summer project at a specific conference, involvement in the department, more shadowing, volunteering, etc.
