Session Overview

This session offers guidance on specialty and career planning, residency applications, and away rotation preparation during the Patient Care Phase. Students will learn how to use data and resources to evaluate their general level of competitiveness for specialties of interest, create parallel plans, and build strong application & match strategies.

The optional second 45 minute away rotation session will help students understand the use of away rotations and how to plan for them.

Both sessions will be recorded and posted on the Career Advising website and on the Integrations Canvas page.

This advice is for all MS3 students and includes first generation and BIPOC student lenses:

As you’re continuing to plan your fourth-year schedules, here are a few things to consider!

  • If you are considering/exploring various specialties, make sure you schedule them early (spring, early summer)! You can always save neurology and emergency medicine for last if you don’t think you’ll pursue them as a career.
  • If your specialty recommends away rotations, take time over break to look at VSLO, their FAQs, and how away rotations work, including scholarships advertised at certain programs. The UWSOM Registration Team has put together a great compilation of resources regarding away rotations on their website. In the months ahead, VLSO electives will be updated by programs and UWSOM Registration will update their website on the 2025-2026 away application cycle.
