To the UW Medicine Community

A number of you have shared questions and concerns about how new federal policies may impact patient care, research, service, teaching and learning at UW Medicine. We are committed to supporting our community while navigating this uncertain terrain, and to sharing information as transparently and swiftly as possible.

UW Medicine leaders are working closely with UW leadership, the Washington Attorney General’s Office, and our external affairs team to closely evaluate and monitor federal policy changes and the possible impacts they could have on our work. It is important that we remain aligned and coordinated in our response and communications given the rapidly changing environment so that we can provide informed updates and guide our decisions.

To ensure you can stay informed with the most recent updates in real time, we have developed an information hub, UW Medicine Federal Policy Updates page (UW NetID required), where we will post the most recent communications, updates, FAQs, resources and other relevant information for the UW Medicine community.

I also want to address four areas in which we are receiving many questions:

  • ICE: We know there is concern regarding what clinicians and staff should do if U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or other immigration authorities enter our hospitals and clinics. Please consult this FAQ on the aforementioned webpage for guidance.
  • Research and Federal Funding: On Jan. 31, 2025, a Federal Court issued a Temporary Restraining Order directing Federal grant-making agencies to “…not pause, freeze, impede, block, cancel, or terminate…awards and obligations…” See the UW Office of Research’s latest guidance: Guidance on New Administration Policy for Federal Research – UW Research
  • Financial Aid and Federal Funding: A number of students are concerned about whether the freeze on federal funds directly impacts their financial aid. We have been advised that the freeze was not applied to financial aid for students.
  • Gender-Affirming Care: UW Medicine remains committed to providing care to meet the needs of all our patients. While we are evaluating the impact of the executive orders, we remain committed to providing clinical care to all our patients and have not changed the care we provide at this time. We also want to acknowledge the impact such federal orders have on our patients and care teams and will continue to track developments and keep you informed.

I will be providing regular communications such as this when appropriate, to keep you apprised and informed of new information as it becomes available, and to answer questions you have. To ensure we best understand your questions and concerns around federal policy changes, we have created this form, which you can use to share them with us. You will have the option to share anonymously. Your feedback will help ensure we are able to be most responsive to our community’s needs.

Thank you for all that you do to support our mission of improving the health of the public for all people, and thank you for continuing to support one another.

Sincerely,

Timothy H. Dellit, MD (He, Him, His)
