We’re excited to invite MS1s to get involved with the Health Career Collaborative (HCC), a national nonprofit organization that works to inspire high school students to pursue careers in healthcare. HCC has chapters across the country and is recognized by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
Our UW chapter is partnering with Seattle World School, which serves students from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Through monthly visits, we’ll introduce students to healthcare careers through interactive lessons, hands-on activities (including suturing workshops!), mentorship, and career exploration.
We’d especially love to have students from diverse backgrounds and with a range of lived experiences involved in the chapter. Having mentors who students can see themselves in and who can share different perspectives and experiences navigating education and healthcare can make these interactions particularly meaningful. That said, anyone who is passionate about mentorship, community engagement, and supporting the next generation of healthcare providers is welcome to join! No prior teaching experience is necessary.
We’re looking for medical students who are interested in:
- Becoming a regular volunteer with our monthly school visits
- Helping with chapter leadership, event planning, and organization
The expected commitment is approximately:
- 2 hours/month in person at Seattle World School
- 2–3 hours/month for planning meetings (typically held over Zoom)
If you’re interested in getting involved in any capacity, please fill out the interest form here.
Our next event is a suturing workshop on October 23 from 8:45 am – 10:40 am. The address is 1700 E Union St. Seattle, WA 98122, and we’ll be in Room 502. I’ll send out another email to the people who fill out the interest form with more details.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. We’d love to have you join us!
