Clinical Assessment Updates
As we approach the midpoint of the first year of the Competency Mapping and Programmatic Assessment System (COMPASS) transformation in the required clerkships, which includes frequent workplace-based assessments (WBAs) and pass/fail grading, Curriculum would like to share a few updates.
To date, students and educators have completed over 15,000 WBAs across the required clerkships. Most students are successfully completing the expected number of WBAs and demonstrating the required clinical activities during each clerkship.
As a reminder, traditional block clerkship students should continue to:
- Complete an average of three WBAs each week (maximum of 6 in a single week)
- Obtain at least one WBA for each required activity during every clerkship (two on IM)
- Request educator confirmation whenever possible
We recognize that during this initial phase of implementation, students have not always been able to obtain educator confirmation despite making appropriate efforts. During this period, unverified WBAs will count toward both weekly and activity-level completion requirements, and clerkship directors will take documented implementation challenges into account during grade review.
This adjustment is intended to account for implementation challenges rather than to change expectations. Students should continue to enter WBAs as a student and request educator confirmation, as verified WBAs remain the most useful source of feedback for students, coaches and competency committee review. Students should not indicate that they’re filling out the form as a preceptor.

Become an HCOP Ambassador
Med students are invited to apply to become Ambassadors for the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP). In addition to mentoring undergraduates interested in health careers, ambassadors will also receive access to service learning and educational opportunities related to rural and underserved care as well as networking opportunities. Ambassadors also receive a stipend for their participation.
The priority application deadline is September 6. Check out the HCOP website for more information.
