From June 29 through July 24, Idaho WWAMI student Aiden Niblett immersed himself in rural medicine during his Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP) rotation at Two Rivers Medical Clinic in Weiser. Under the mentorship of preceptor Lore Wootton, MD, Aiden learned how rural clinicians address the unique healthcare needs of their communities. As a fluent Spanish speaker, he was also particularly interested in opportunities to serve Spanish-speaking patients.
RUOP is a four-week elective that gives rising second-year medical students hands-on experience in rural community medicine while learning alongside physicians and other healthcare professionals in rural and underserved communities across the WWAMI region.
Aiden is currently exploring internal medicine and hematology/oncology, but said he is keeping his options open and focused on learning from the physicians and mentors he encounters along the way.
Outside of medicine, Aiden enjoys spending time with his wife and two-year-old son. His favorite pastimes include fishing, hiking and making music—whether listening, singing or playing.
