The UW School of Medicine Continuing Medical Education (CME) Office is transitioning to the Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) Office. This evolution reflects how healthcare is delivered today—through coordinated, team‑based care across professions.
What’s Changing
- Broader scope: In addition to physician education, the IPCE Office will more intentionally support learning that includes nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals.
- Greater emphasis on team‑based learning: Educational activities will increasingly focus on collaboration, communication, and coordinated care across disciplines.
- Expanded credit options: Alongside ongoing physician CME, the office now supports nursing and pharmacy credits and will extend credit offerings to additional professional groups in the coming year.
What’s Staying the Same
- Physician CME continues: AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ will still be offered when applicable.
- No disruption to current activities: Existing and planned CME activities do not need to change.
- Same team, same support: The experienced staff, planning processes, and accreditation standards remain unchanged.
- Single‑profession activities are still appropriate: Not all activities must be interprofessional.
Why This Matters
Modern patient care depends on effective healthcare teams. The IPCE model strengthens education that prepares clinicians to work together more effectively—improving patient outcomes, safety, quality, and equity. Over the coming months, you will begin to see the IPCE Office name reflected in UW communications and educational materials. For questions or support, please contact cme@uw.edu or ipce@uw.edu.
