Rooted in Bozeman, Driven to Care: Sofia Shomento Matches in OB-GYN

After years of dedication to reproductive healthcare, Montana WWAMI fourth-year student Sofia Shomento reached an exciting milestone, matching into OB-GYN at the University of Utah.

From a young age, Sofia Shomento found herself drawn to reproductive healthcare—first through her work with Bridgercare in Bozeman, and later through her clinical experiences in medical school. During her third-year clerkships, OB-GYN stood out for its unique blend of surgery, primary care, and longitudinal patient relationships.

“One moment you can be in the OR, attending an emergent delivery, or counseling a patient in clinic,” she shared. “I love the variety and the opportunity to be present during such meaningful moments in people’s lives.”

Sofia also credits her mom, an OB-GYN and REI subspecialist, for showing her the profound impact of the field—from building long-term patient relationships to expanding access to specialized care in rural communities.
What she finds most rewarding is the combination of high-stakes care, continuity, and advocacy.
“Pregnancy is an incredible window for healthcare intervention,” she said. “There are also so many opportunities to advocate for patients and improve access to care.”
Inspired by a love of science and early exposure through Bozeman High School’s Bio-Med program, Sofia was drawn to medicine as a career rooted in lifelong learning, teamwork, and human connection.

“It’s a privilege to be there for people in such profound moments—from birth to death.” Looking ahead, Sofia hopes to return home to Bozeman to practice and teach. “I feel deeply connected to this community and the mentors who shaped my medical school experience. I’d love to give back by caring for patients here and training future students.”
