Hooked in the OR: Erin Petersen Matches in Urology

Erin Petersen, a Montana WWAMI student, will soon head to the University of Washington after matching into Urology (research track). Her path to urology began with a chance connection. After meeting a urologic oncologist at UW, she became involved in research and quickly discovered the specialty’s remarkable breadth.

“After scrubbing in on my first radical cystectomy, I was hooked,” Erin said. “It’s a wonderful mix of surgery, office procedures, long-term patient relationships, and a focus on quality of life.”

As she looks ahead to residency, Erin is excited to continue building her surgical skills and caring for patients across the WWAMI region.

“I’m most excited to develop my skills as a surgeon and serve patients in the WWAMI region,” she said. “I’m also excited to get to know my co-interns and senior residents.”

Her advice for medical students interested in the field: “Don’t be afraid to reach out to attendings and residents. Most want to share this awesome field and are happy to find ways to get eager med students involved.”
