From Wasilla to Colorado: Ben Henderson’s Match Day Moment and the Calling That Led Him There

The room was filled with anticipation as fourth-year Alaska WWAMI student Ben Henderson stood ready to open the envelope that would reveal the next chapter of his medical training. In a moment that marked years of dedication and growth, everything suddenly came into focus.

“When I opened my envelope, I felt a wave of relief and excitement that all the work I put in paid off and I’d get to spend the next three years in an amazing program in an amazing location,” Henderson said. “It meant a lot to me when I finally stopped crying to see that my partner and family members were all crying as well because they knew how excited I was about Colorado!”

Henderson, who grew up in Wasilla, Alaska, matched into Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado, where he will begin residency training this summer. The outcome affirmed both his aspirations and the path that brought him there.

His interest in internal medicine developed from a desire to stand up for patients and help guide their care across complex medical systems. That commitment was shaped in part by his time working in a local ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of strong physician advocacy.

Seeing a hospitalist navigate high-stakes decisions and speak up for patients left a lasting impression. It was the kind of physician Henderson knew he wanted to become.

“I think helping patients and their families navigate critical illness and end-of-life care are most fulfilling,” he said.

Looking ahead, Henderson plans to pursue critical care, with a long-term interest in transplant medicine. While lung transplant services are not currently available in Alaska, he hopes to stay closely connected to his home state. His vision includes partnering with larger academic centers while finding ways to improve access for Alaskan patients, whether through care coordination or even supporting field clinics.

As he prepares to relocate and begin residency, Henderson is embracing both the excitement of a new environment and the responsibility that comes with it.

For this proud Alaskan, Match Day was not just about where he is going, but why he chose this path in the first place.
