Celebrating Excellence: Dr. Kimberly Thomas Honored with 2025 Leadership Award

Kimberly Thomas, MD, MSPH, Program Director of the Alaska Family Medicine Residency (AKFMR), has been recognized with the 2025 UW Family Medicine Leadership Excellence Award. This is a testament to her exceptional leadership and dedication.

Dr. Thomas is a leader with deep roots in Alaska’s communities. She joined AKFMR as a faculty member in 2011 and took on the role of program director in June 2023. She also served as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for Providence Alaska Medical Center from 2019 – 2024. The DIO ensures that residency and fellowship programs are effective, supportive, and aligned with national standards while also being responsive to local health care needs.

Her leadership extends beyond administrative roles. Dr. Thomas is an active member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Medically Underserved Areas and Populations Workgroup, championing equitable care in communities often overlooked.

Dr. Thomas brings a compassionate and holistic vision to medicine and is known for advocating for comprehensive, inclusive care. She specializes in obstetrics and reproductive health, full-scope family medicine, substance use treatment, LGBTQIA+ care, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), social justice, and rural health.

As part of the WWAMI network, her accomplishment uplifts the entire region and highlights how Alaska continues to shape innovative, compassionate physicians.
