LCME Weekly Update: Element 6.1 Program and Learning Objectives
Element 6.1 is one of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) components covering the medical education curriculum. It requires that the Medical Education Program Objectives (MEPOs) include explicit outcomes that allow the school to assess students’ progress in the curriculum as they attain key competencies.
In Spring 2024, the Curriculum Committee approved revisions to the MEPOs based on the initial work of the Curriculum Learning Objective Oversight and Management (CLOOM) committee and subsequent stakeholder feedback. These revisions streamlined its MEPOs from 61 objectives to 32, with a focus on six core competency domains: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Communication, Service to Patient and Community (Professionalism), Systems-Based Practice, and Practice- Based Learning and Improvement. The updated MEPOs are aligned with the mission of the medical education program that prepares students to thrive in residency and succeed as practicing physicians.
To inform students, faculty, and residents of the current MEPOs, the curriculum team is featuring one objective in the weekly “Competency of the Week” section in the weekly student newsletter in the Fall of 2024.
