Make a difference in healthcare.

  • AHEC Scholars is a two-year education and training program with the goal of supporting a diverse cohort of health professions students with an interest in working with rural and underserved communities.
  • We will provide you with skills and experiences to better prepare you to serve patients faced with barriers to healthcare access.
  • AHEC Scholars is an interprofessional program where you will learn alongside students from other disciplines and develop team-based skills. Upon completion, you will receive a nationally recognized certificate that you can add to your CV.

Eligibility

  • Medical students are eligible to apply.
  • Emphasis on enrolling students from disadvantaged backgrounds, rural areas, and racial/ethnic groups that are inadequately represented in the health workforce, but this is not a requirement for acceptance.

Schedule

  • Year One:
    • Fall 2024: Evening Kickoff event
    • Winter 2025: Weekly series of 8 evening Zoom classes where you will learn about the topics listed below alongside your classmates and guest speakers*. There are multiple scheduling options.
    • 40 hours per year of fieldwork at rural or underserved sites in a clinical environment (your primary program rotations or employment site can meet this requirement!)
    • Special Learning Events (online and in-person)
  • Year Two:
    • Fall 2025: Weekly series of 8 evening Zoom classes (cont.)*.
    • 40 hours per year of fieldwork (cont.)
    • *Each year, UW students can sign up for one (1) elective credit if they choose.

8 Core-Learning Topics

  • Interprofessional education, behavioral health integration, social determinants of health, cultural humility training, practice transformation, current and emerging health issues, community health work, telehealth

Who you will be learning with

  • Last year in Seattle, the program had students from Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, PT/OT, Prosthetics and Orthotics, PA (MEDEX) and N.D. students from Bastyr, and more. 130+ students across Washington were enrolled.
