GQ Week 7 Update! Wellness and Counseling Services

This week’s Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) update focuses on student health insurance and mental health services. Student feedback helps us recognize the support students value and identify opportunities to improve.

As a reminder, the AAMC Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) is administered annually to graduating medical students.

Overview of the results:

  • Satisfaction with student health insurance was 23%, compared with 66% nationally.
  • In 2026, 61% of UWSOM respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with student mental health services, compared with 81% nationally.
  • While both results declined from 2025, the results are helping us focus our improvement efforts. We are using GQ trends and student feedback to identify barriers, strengthen access to services, and track progress over time as part of our continuous quality improvement work.

Strengthening Wellness and Counseling Services

The Wellness and Counseling Services team is taking several steps to improve access and support across WWAMI:

  • New structure, expanded partnership: The Wellness and Counseling team has moved from Student Affairs to the School of Medicine Office of Well-being & Support under Dr. Anne Browning. This new partnership will increase focus on work-life integration, psychological safety and peer support. The Wellness team will continue working with Student Affairs while expanding support for students across WWAMI.
  • WWAMI-wide site visits: Director Cliff Kelly is visiting each WWAMI site this year to meet with regional students and explain what services are available and how to access them.
  • WWAMI-wide licensure: Counselors are pursuing licensure across all WWAMI states to help students continue seeing a UWSOM counselor during clerkship rotations.

Together, these efforts reflect the team’s commitment to make confidential support more accessible throughout their medical education.

Connect with Wellness and Counseling Services

UWSOM counseling is free and confidential. To make an appointment, contact the counselor of your choice in person, by email, or by phone. The Wellness and Counseling Services webpage lists counselors and contact information by location and phase of training. Students may also contact a UWSOM counselor for help identifying resources available where they are currently located.
