Third-year WWAMI student Abhinav Janappareddi described Dr. Tyler Birch as “one of the best physicians I have worked with so far,” praising his ability to teach, motivate and challenge learners during an outpatient internal medicine rotation.
His impact on medical students earned Dr. Birch, an internal medicine physician at St. Luke’s Clinic in Meridian, an Idaho WWAMI Excellence in Teaching Award.
According to Janappareddi, Dr. Birch creates an environment where students are encouraged to think critically, develop clinical skills and grow in confidence. He credited Dr. Birch’s approachable teaching style and ability to break down complex medical concepts into lessons that are easy to understand and apply in practice.
“Dr. Birch was kind, exceptionally knowledgeable and explained things to me in ways I could understand,” Janappareddi wrote in his nomination letter.
He also admired Dr. Birch’s ability to connect with patients and communicate medical information clearly and compassionately. Those interactions provided
valuable examples of patient-centered care that will continue to influence his own development as a future physician.
In addition to sharing his clinical expertise, Dr. Birch gives students meaningful opportunities to participate in patient care while offering thoughtful feedback to support their growth. The nominator noted that Dr. Birch encouraged independence in the clinical setting while helping students strengthen their skills and clinical judgment.
At St. Luke’s, Dr. Birch provides comprehensive primary care for adult patients. As a clinical instructor, he mentors medical students, helping them develop strong clinical skills, professionalism and compassionate approaches to patient care.
