Answering the Call: Benjamin Nalls Matches in Military General Surgery

For fourth-year Montana WWAMI student Benjamin Nalls, Military Match Day marks more than the next step in training. It’s a continuation of a lifelong commitment to service.

Nalls matched into general surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, through the military match.

Before medical school, Nalls served as a Marine, an experience that profoundly shaped his path to medicine.

“Deployments showed me some of the best and worst humanity has to offer and led me to reconsider my purpose in the world,” he said. “I knew I wanted to help people.”

His journey from military service to nursing and ultimately to medical school reflects both resilience and clarity of purpose. At Montana WWAMI, Nalls has built on that foundation, preparing for a career that will allow him to continue serving others, both in uniform and in the operating room.

Matching at Madigan Army Medical Center brings his professional and personal missions full circle, combining surgical training with military service. As he prepares to begin residency, Nalls remains grounded in gratitude for those who supported him along the way.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support of my incredible wife,” he said. “She is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Montana WWAMI proudly congratulates Ben on this remarkable achievement and thanks him for his continued dedication to caring for others.
