Alaska WWAMI Welcomes Dr. Nicholas Phelps as Assistant Dean, Foundations Phase

Alaska WWAMI is excited to welcome Nicholas Phelps, MD, as our new Assistant Dean for the Foundations Phase. He began September 1, 2025, after a nationwide search and will transition to being fully on-site at the University of Alaska Anchorage in October.

Dr. Phelps brings a wealth of experience from Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has served on the faculty in Medical Education and Population Health. He earned his PhD in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies at UT-Austin, and his MA degree in College Student Development from St. Edward’s University. Before becoming a faculty member, he worked in student affairs, academic services, and university advancement. These experiences have shaped his student-centered approach to teaching and leadership.

Dr. Phelps is excited about the opportunity to work with Alaska WWAMI students.

“The program’s focus on providing training for students from rural and underserved areas is inspiring and a key reason for my choice to join the school,” he said.

The dedication of the faculty also stood out for him.

“The quality of the education Alaska WWAMI provides has been evident in every interaction I’ve had with them, and I look forward to continuing the wonderful work of my predecessor, Dr. Young,” he added.

One of his goals is to expand opportunities for students.

“Our focus on educating the students of Alaska is what makes us special and valuable to the state, so increasing our accessibility to potential students will be key,” he said.

He’s also looking forward to supporting his clinical counterpart, Dr. Barb Doty, by increasing opportunities for students who want to complete their clinical training in Alaska.

When he’s not working, Dr. Phelps is a classically trained singer who plans to get involved in Anchorage’s music community. He is also an outdoor enthusiast and is eager to explore Alaska’s trails, rivers, and slopes.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Phelps to the Alaska WWAMI-ly!
