Addiction Medicine Research Opportunity for First Year Medical Students

The University of Washington’s Medical Student Addiction Research (MedStAR) Program would like to make UWSOM MS1s aware that applications are now open to join the program’s 2026 cohort!

This is a unique opportunity for first year medical students at any UWSOM Foundation site to satisfy their Independent Investigative Inquiry (III) graduation requirement while gaining long-term research and clinical mentorship in the field of Addiction Medicine through an NIH-funded program. See this flyer for more details: Medstar_Brochure-General

MedStAR is dedicated to providing research training and education to the next generation of physicians to address substance use and use disorders in Urban and Rural Communities across Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Students who participate in this program benefit from continuous clinical and research mentorship throughout their remaining medical school training, as well as additional supports to work toward the goal of presenting their research at a scientific meeting and publishing in a peer-reviewed journal. Students also have opportunities to network with Addiction Medicine fellows and faculty to learn more about careers caring for persons with substance use disorders.

Applications will be accepted until 11:59pm PT September 17th. Students can access the application on the UW MedStAR website. After applying, students may be invited to complete interviews with our program faculty, and selected students will be notified of acceptance in early October. Accepted students will be offered a mentor/project matched to their clinical interests. Research projects and training are focused on health services, epidemiology, and clinical research.

Students do not need to be considering a primarily research-focused career to be eligible. Students who have strong interest in Addiction Medicine, and who share a commitment to the program’s goal of health equity, are encouraged to apply.
