Idaho WWAMI Graduate Joins Inaugural MSI Family Medicine Residency Class

Zachary Havlovick, MD

Idaho WWAMI is proud to celebrate Dr. Zachary Havlovick, who has been selected as one of six residents in the inaugural class of the Mountain States Institute (MSI) Family Medicine Residency Program based in Nampa.

“I matched to one of my top programs and was thrilled,” Dr. Havlovick said. “I never really paid any mind to the idea that we’d be the first class. It just had all the features I was looking for in a program, and that’s what mattered to me.”

Originally from Idaho Falls, Dr. Havlovick earned his undergraduate degree at Idaho State University before completing medical school through Idaho WWAMI. Now, as part of Idaho’s newest residency, he is continuing his education close to home while preparing to serve the state’s growing healthcare needs.

“It means everything to me to continue my training in Idaho,” he said. “These are my people, this is the state I care about, and this is where I want to make a difference.”

Launched July 1, 2025, through a partnership between Saint Alphonsus and MSI, the residency program offers full-scope family medicine, including inpatient and emergency medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and rural practice. Dr. Havlovick is genuinely interested in scope training (esophagogastroduodenoscopies and colonoscopies) and in conducting procedures such as cesarean section deliveries, joint injections, IUD/Nexplanon insertions, vasectomies, and circumcisions).

He said the experience so far has deepened his sense of purpose while highlighting the complexity of healthcare challenges ahead.

“I’m just beginning to experience the rewards of giving back, and at the same time, I’m seeing how some problems are nuanced and difficult to address,” he said. “The solutions are probably going to be just as nuanced and difficult to find.”

For Havlovick, the stage of training is both a professional tuning point and a personal milestone.

“This is where the most change will occur and where the experiences will make a bigger impact on who I’ll be as a physician,” he said. “Personally, it’s also huge because I feel like I’m starting to make my way in life. My wife, kids, and the rest of my family are so proud of me for reaching this next step, and that means the world to me.”

Dr. Havlovick’s selection marks an exciting step forward for graduate medical education in Idaho and a meaningful milestone for both MSI and the Idaho WWAMI program.
