Shining a Spotlight on Dr. Nicholas Rosenfeld: Leading Clinical Education in Juneau

Alaska WWAMI is proud to feature Nicholas Rosenfeld, MD, our Juneau Clerkship Site Director.

Dr. Rosenfeld brings a broad range of experience to his role. In addition to serving as Clerkship Director, he practices both emergency and family medicine for Juneau Emergency Medical Associates. He also serves as Associate Medical Director at Dahl Memorial Clinic in Skagway, a position that requires him to fly to work from Juneau, where he lives. He serves in yet another role as an FAA Senior Aviation Medical Examiner. His diverse skill set, and clinical expertise help create a rich, well-rounded learning environment for Alaska WWAMI students training in the state’s capital city.

Under his leadership, the Juneau site offers meaningful clinical rotations that prepare students for the distinct challenges of regional medicine. Students work alongside dedicated physicians who are deeply connected to the community and committed to mentoring the next generation of healthcare leaders. Dr. Rosenfeld’s passion for teaching is evident in every aspect of his work.

“I absolutely love to teach,” he said. “My shifts are more meaningful and fun when I get to share the wild and wonderful world of rural Alaskan medicine with students.”

Accessible only by boat or plane, Juneau is a uniquely remote city, bringing the realities of practicing Alaska medicine into sharp focus. With limited resources, unpredictable conditions, and the nearest trauma center hours away by air, students quickly learn to adapt and think on their feet.

In this demanding environment, Dr. Rosenfeld fosters an atmosphere where challenge meets opportunity. Whether he’s guiding a student through a critical procedure or pointing out the aurora from the hospital helipad, students leave with more than clinical skills; they leave inspired.

“We may not be the cutting edge of medicine, but we are certainly the wild west of medicine,” he said.

We’re grateful for Dr. Rosenfeld’s leadership and his dedication to preparing the next generation of Alaska physicians.
