Helena is the capital city of Montana and the seat of Lewis and Clark County. Originally a gold camp during the Montana gold rush, the City of Helena was established on October 30, 1864. Unlike other “gold rush communities” in the region which declined after the gold was mined, Helena’s location on what became prominent transportation routes, solidified its existence as a major hub. Helena was named the capital of Montana Territory in 1875. In 1894, it was established as the capital of the State of Montana.
