Office of Rural Programs

Travel and Housing

Travel to/from your WRITE site

Reimbursement for travel to/from your WRITE site is processed by the Academic Affairs Office in Seattle.  Email your reimbursement request indicating travel to WRITE site along with your mileage log (MapQuest or Google maps indicating mileage) to gowwami@uw.edu.  Please refer to the WWAMI Student Travel page for more information.

Please note: while Seattle is considered to be a WRITE student’s home base, the School of Medicine will pay for a student to travel to their WRITE site as long as the starting point is within the price range if they were to travel from Seattle to their WRITE site.  For example, if the Glasgow student was in Bozeman prior to WRITE, the School would pay for mileage from Bozeman to Glasgow.

The WRITE program, for the purposes of student travel, is treated the same way as any other WWAMI required clerkship travel. Students will be reimbursed for travel to their WRITE site, or the School will purchase airfare to fly students to WRITE sites in Alaska. Alaska-site WRITE students who wish to ship a personal vehicle to Alaska for the duration of the WRITE program should contact gowwami@uw.edu for details, as the Washington State laws that control what we’re allowed to do in this regard are subject to change.

Housing and Transportation at Site

Students must live in their assigned rural community while rotating at the WRITE site. Past experiences have proven students can make a positive impact as part of the community.

Housing is provided by the WRITE site at no cost to the student.  Prior to the rotation, the student and site will coordinate initial access to the property. WRITE students should plan to relocate to their WRITE site the weekend prior to their start date.  Please refer to the WWAMI Clerkship Student Housing page for more information.

Students are responsible for their own personal transportation and meals during the WRITE experience.

Exam Travel

If a student is required to travel to the WWAMI Regional Office to take a final exam, they will either be reimbursed for driving to the exam site or the School will purchase airfare for the student, whichever is appropriate.

For more information, visit WWAMI Student Exam Travel.

Winter Break Travel for 2023-2024

Winter Break: 12/18/2023 – 01/01/2024

For students who begin their WRITE clerkship Autumn Quarter and finish in Winter Quarter, their Foundation site is considered their home. The School of Medicine will provide round-trip travel funding from their WRITE site to their Foundation site. If the Foundation site is not their final destination for winter break, the student will cover the cost of the remaining travel.

Students who completed WRITE during Summer or Autumn Quarter will have already finished their WRITE clerkship before the winter break, so they would follow travel policies as outlined on the WWAMI Student Travel page.
