Curriculum Overview

The WRITE clerkship curriculum focuses on several core areas. Refer to the WRITE Canvas page [MEDLIC 1] | [MEDLIC 2] for a detailed description of everything listed below.

1. Clinical Encounters

Clinical Encounters are a list of diagnoses and procedures that students must encounter by the completion of both Patient Care & Explore and Focus clerkships. During your WRITE clerkship, you will have contact with patients with many common problems. As you see patients with these conditions, track your interactions with them by logging them in E*Value.

WRITE has a specified list that students must complete, please refer to the WRITE Canvas page for more details.

2. Workplace Based Assessments (WBA) / Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA)

Students are assessed daily on their level of entrustment in nine key professional activities:

  • Gather a History and Perform a Physical Examination (EPA1)
  • Prioritize a Differential Diagnosis Following a Clinical Encounter (EPA2)
  • Recommend and Interpret Common Diagnostic and Screening Tests (EPA3)
  • Enter and Discuss Orders and Prescriptions (EPA4)
  • Document a Clinical Encounter in the Patient Record (EPA5)
  • Provide an Oral Presentation of a Clinical Encounter (EPA6)
  • Form Clinical Questions and Retrieve Evidence to Advance Patient Care (EPA7)
  • Collaborate as a Member of an Interprofessional Team (EPA9)
  • Identify System Failures and Contribute to a Culture of Safety and Improvement (EPA13)

Preceptors use a student-generated survey to indicate entrustment level, context of encounter, and give formative feedback.  More information can be found on the Evaluation and Grading and Canvas.

3. Professionalism

Professional behavior is a skill that students and faculty will develop and refine throughout their careers. Using the expectations mentioned at our orientation webinar, in the objectives, students will reflect on their skills and attitudes and seek help when appropriate. The workplace-based assessment includes a field for professionalism concerns.

4. Community Project / Community Service

Students are required to complete 20 hours of service learning with a written reflection or an approved community-based project. More information can be found here.

5. Write-Ups

Students will be expected to complete four write-ups during WRITE, two during MEDLIC 1 and two during MEDLIC 2. These write-ups will cover each of the four domains (adult medicine, pediatrics, mental/behavioral health, and women’s health.) These write-ups should be taken from the patient record, de-identified, and may include a progress note or a history and physical. Feedback will be provided by WRITE co-directors. In addition to the ambulatory scripts, templates and rubrics are available in Canvas to help you prepare.

6. Oral Case Presentations

Students will be required to present four oral case presentations, two during MEDLIC 1 and two during MEDLIC 2, one in each of the four domains: adult medicine, pediatrics, mental/behavioral health, and women’s health.
