NameCoach helps with names, pronunciation and pronouns

Published on

Since 2020, the School of Medicine has been using NameCoach as a tool for you to create an audio recording of your name, pronunciation text and pronouns. The recording can then be accessed by other students, faculty and staff. This has been used primarily by students in the Foundations Phase using the NameCoach tab in each Canvas course.

Recently, the team created a new Canvas course where all students, including those in clerkships, can go to manage their NameCoach information. In addition to being available to students, faculty and staff using Canvas, this information is regularly updated in eValue for use by clerkship administrators and faculty.

Login to UW Canvas and access the UWSOM NameCoach course to create or update your NameCoach profile information. For additional information visit the NameCoach student webpage. For support, you can email somaltsupport@uw.edu.

How names are pronounced is important. Research shows that correct name pronunciation helps people feel respected and included. Please read this post in The Huddle to hear personal thoughts from UW Medicine physicians, left, about the importance of pronouncing names correctly.
